Biography – Town Manager John Simko
Town Manager John Simko began his current position with the Town of Greenville April 24, 2000. A Piscataquis County native, Simko graduated from Bowdoin College in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and also Environmental Studies. After graduation, he worked for then-Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell in Washington, DC as a Legislative Correspondent. In 1997, Simko was named Town Manager of Sangerville, where he was recognized by the Maine Town & City Management Association as "Rookie of the Year” in 1998. In 2001, the Maine Forest Products Council awarded John their “Outstanding Public Service” award for his work in forming the Maine Woods Coalition. In 2002, Simko completed a municipal leadership course through the Maine Municipal Association and the Muskie School of Public Service. In 2004, the Maine Warden Service Association presented John with a “Certificate of Merit” for his work assisting Game Wardens. In 2008, John and six of his peers from the Town of Greenville completed the Penquis Leadership Institute, a year-long course of study through the Penquis Higher Education Center. Also in December 2008, John was named President of the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council for a second time (the first in 2002). John has held numerous leadership positions in various capacities, including but not limited to:

  • President, Piscataquis County Economic Development Council – 2002 & 2009
  • Appointed member, Legislative Task Force on Growth Management – 2001
  • Appointed member, Presiding Officer's Task Force on Creating a Future for Youth in Maine – 2003
  • Appointed member, Governor's Youth Conference Planning Team – 2003
  • Appointed member, Governor's Task Force on Traditional Uses and Access to Lands in Maine - 2004
  • President, Composites Technology Centers Corporation – 2004 - 2006
  • Appointed Member Maine Forest Legacy Committee – 2004-2006
  • Director, Eastern Maine Development Corporation – 2005 - 2007
  • Director, Maine Service Centers Corporation – 2003 – 2005
  • Director, Maine Town & City Management Association – 2005 - 2007
  • Member, Maine Municipal Association Legislative Policy Committee – 1998 – present
  • Steering Committee member, Northern Forest Sustainable Economy Initiative – 2006-2008.
  • Member, Regional Advisory Council for FEMA Region #1 – 2007-2009.
In addition to his work as Town Manager, John is certified Firefighter I through the Maine State Fire Academy, and is an active member of and Co-Training Officer for the Greenville Fire Department. John is also licensed as an Intermediate EMT through Maine EMS, and is an active per diem employee of the Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital Ambulance Service. John and his daughter Ashley (age 8 in 2009) live in Greenville and enjoy many outdoor and community activities with the rest of their family.
