The Natural Resource Education Center (NREC) is a non-profit organization with the mission of providing resource-based educational programming to visitors and residents of the Moosehead Lake Region in Maine.
Our aim is to develop a facility that will house orientation and interpretation services, educational exhibits, on- and off-site programs, interpretive trails, and events that explain and celebrate the unique natural and cultural heritage of the region. While working towards this goal, we have already developed a regular program series, including presentations and workshops by notable speakers from within and around the community, guided nature and heritage hikes, and a bus tour through our part of the Northern forest.
The region epitomizes the traditional Maine working forest, rich in resources that have sustained both extractive and recreational use for more than a century. It is a land of trees, mountains, lakes, rivers, and bogs, largely under private ownership and yet sparsely developed, wealthy in natural and human treasures, full of stories we want to tell.
