Greenville told to find garbage solution
Monday, November 24, 2003
By Diana Bowley, Of the NEWS Staff - GREENVILLE - They say one man's trash is another man's treasure - but for Greenville, it's a recurring nightmare. Problems with overflowing trash bins and people leaving behind mattresses, televisions and batteries, especially on Shoals Road and Sandy Bay, have exasperated municipal officials. Selectmen were told the municipal clerks continually were fielding complaints about the trash bins.

"I'm tired about hearing about that," Selectman Alan McBrierty said Wednesday. "This is an issue all the time."

Selectmen were told to return to next month's meeting with some concrete suggestions on how to eliminate the problem.

Some suggestions were aired this week, including McBrierty's suggestion to pull the bins and provide maps to the landfill.

In other business, selectmen plan to ask Piscataquis County commissioners to plow the half-mile the county owns on Depot Street. In the past, Greenville Steam Co. has paid to have the road cleared for its chip trucks.

This year, Greenville Steam ended its philanthropy and has requested that members of the Forest Products Maintenance Corp., which includes the steam company and other businesses located in the Greenville Industrial Park, share the cost of the plowing in the park.

Simko said Forest Products does not think it appropriate to continue to pay for the county's section of road, so it will be up to the county to provide the service. There is a willing contractor who will plow the road, he said. Jack Whittier has plowed the road in the past and is willing to continue, but will require payment from the county, he said.

Selectmen voted to close the town office Dec. 25 and 26. In previous years, the town closed early Christmas Eve and New Year's Day. This year, the town office will be open the normal operating hours Dec. 24 and Jan. 2.
