"Kids & Trees Growing Together"
Tuesday, December 21, 2004
GREENVILLE—The Natural Resource Education Center (NREC) has just entered the second year of its Kids & Trees Growing Together program by expanding the participation of additional classes. This year, Fourth Graders in Union 60, SAD 4 - Guilford, SAD 41 - Milo, SAD 46 - Dexter and SAD 68 - Dover will have the opportunity to place flags where fir trees will be planted in the spring of 2006. The location of the flags will be spaced on 6-foot centers and in straight lines by the kids, using a tape measure and a transit donated for this purpose by the United States Forest Service. The tree plantation for Union 60 will be at the NREC building site on Route 15 near the MDOT rest area. The tree plantations for the other School Districts will be at the NREC tree farm and wood lot in Dover-Foxcroft

During the week of December 22, Moosehead Forestry Services, Greenville, will be clearing about half the area needed for the total plantation. The area being cleared at this time is 100 feet by 150 feet. Early next spring, NREC officials will have a work day to chip up the slash left from the clearing operations. The chipped slash will be used for trail treads winding through the Route 15 site. For safety sake, anyone who would like to observe the clearing operation is asked to contact Gary Morse at 695-3825 or 280-0330 (cell phone).

For more information concerning the cutting operation, call Gary at the number above. For more information about the Kids & Trees Growing Together, visit our web site at www.NaturalResourceEducationCenter.org and follow the links.
