By Diana Bowley of the News Staff - GREENVILLE - Grooming of 70 miles of Interconnecting Trail System snowmobile trails in the Moosehead Lake region this winter will fall to the Moosehead Riders Snowmobile Club. Municipal officials and club representatives signed a pact on Wednesday that spells out the responsibilities of both parties for the season. Greenville Town Manager John Simko said the town will continue to own the three trail groomers, will insure them and serve as the fiscal agent for the grooming program. The snowmobile club's responsibilities will be to groom the trails and maintain the equipment, he said. Mechanical breakdowns of the grooming machines have caused the trails to be inadequately groomed in the past, prompting the shift in responsibilities. "I think it will greatly increase the flow of information between constituencies, we'll know better what the club is doing, and the business community will know better what the trail grooming program is all about," Simko said Friday. To help bridge any communication gap, selectmen will appoint a seven-member trail grooming committee that will consist of selectmen, Simko, snowmobile club members, representatives of the business community and the general public. It will serve in an advisory capacity, similar to the role of the airport advisory committee, he said. |
