Moosehead Riders and local firms upgrading trail signs
By MIKE LANGE - GREENVILLE - The Moosehead Riders Snowmobile Club and several area businesses have teamed up in an effort to upgrade signage on the local ITS system, especially on trails with direct access to town, according to club trustee Pete Pratt.

"We've got some Welcome to Greenville signs ready for the end of Depot Street in Greenville Junction and some other places, for starters. They'll also have emergency phone numbers and other information," said Pratt. The club officer said that the ultimate goal is to "cut down on the number of "hit-and-miss" signs that are now in place.''

The old Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce kiosk which was once a fixture in the Junction Wharf for several years has been refurbished, and will be set up at the intersection of the Prong Pond, C.C. and Elephant Mountain roads. 'We'll also have directional signs and information there,' said Pratt.

A large sign is ready to be installed at the Moosehead Riders clubhouse as well, with mileage via snowmobile trail to common destinations such as Pittston Farm, Kokadjo, Seboomook and stops on the way to Millinocket, said Pratt.

The Maine Air National Guard has also installed metal directional signs for the B-52 crash site at Elephant Mountain, Pratt said. A work party from the club and Plum Creek Timber Co. made some improvements at the memorial in late fall, and they hope to eventually build some type of "open gate'' or archway leading to the crash memorial.

Even after 38 years, a great deal of the remains of the ill-fated B-52 are still scattered on Elephant Mountain. Seven out of nine crewmen aboard the plane died when the plane crashed into the mountain on Jan. 20, 1963 during a training flight.

The ITS 85 South trail has also been improved this year, eliminating a bypass made necessary during a timber-cutting operation. Fred Candelero, Steve Mason and Club President Royce Howes were the major forces behind that project.

Now, as Pratt put it, "All we need is snow - and plenty of it!"
