WHEREAS there are plans to develop a visitor's center in Monson, Maine, to promote the plans for a national park in northern Maine, and;

WHEREAS the creation of a National Park would devastate the current wood products industries located in Greenville and in surrounding Piscataquis, Somerset, Penobscot, and Aroostook counties, and;

WHEREAS the current strong economic benefit of snowmobiling in the Moosehead Lake Region would be severely and detrimentally impacted by the creation of a national park, and;

WHEREAS the introduction of 3.2 million acres of private forestland into federal ownership would severely erode the property tax base in Piscataquis County, and;

WHEREAS the current balance between recreational and industrial uses of the North Maine Woods is a strength of our local and regional economy, and;

WHEREAS the Greenville Board of Selectmen, the Piscataquis County Commissioners, and multiple other municipal and county governments are on record as being in opposition to the creation of a national park in northern Maine, and;

WHEREAS a visitor's center in Monson, Maine, on the Moosehead Trail, would give a false impression to visitors to the region that the surrounding communities favor the creation of a national park,

THEN, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED

The Board of Selectmen for the Town of Greenville are in strong opposition to the creation of a visitor's center in Monson, Maine which promotes the creation of a North Maine Woods National Park which would devastate our local economy and communities.
