"The goal of this program is to enhance awareness and include the community when addressing the problem of alcohol and drug-related snowmobile accidents," said Major Tom Santaguida of the Maine Warden Service, "the programs seek to look outside the lines of traditional law enforcement and involve whole communities in seeking solutions to problems."

All game warden supervisors will attend a one-day training session where they will be introduced to the concepts of community policing. Tom Harelson, Colonel of the Wisconsin Warden Service will instruct Maine Game Wardens on how community policing programs work in conservation law enforcement. Wisconsin uses community policing concepts when applicable in their conservation enforcement duties.

During the winter, the Maine Warden Service will hold at least three meetings across the state to bring people and organizations together to discuss and plan a course of action regarding the issue of alcohol and drug-related snowmobile operation.

Meetings will include, but are not limited to, the Maine Warden Service, the Maine Snowmobile Association, local chambers of commerce, local law enforcement, student organizations, school officials, drug and substance abuse counselors, and snowmobile dealers.
