It's almost time for the annual Old Home Sunday in Shirley! This year's celebration of the history and heritage of the small town south of Moosehead Lake will be held on Sunday, August 22. Old Home Sunday will start with a special 11 a.m. worship service of the Shirley Community Church, which will be held at the Shirley Town Hall. Immediately following the church service, a delicious home-cooked dinner will be offered at the same location. Serving of dinner will begin at 12:30 p.m., also in the town hall. The menu will include baked ham, two kinds of baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, homemade bread, biscuits and a wide array of pies made by some of the best cooks in the Moosehead Lake region. Cost of the dinner will be $7 for adults and $3 for children five through 12. Children under five, accompanied by an adult, will be admitted free of charge. This is one of the major fundraising events of the Shirley Community Church. Old Home Sunday has been a popular summer activity in Shirley for generations, and is a chance for people to reunite with relatives and friends and enjoy a church service and old-fashioned "dinner on the grounds." First-time visitors and summer folks are especially invited to attend as the event is open to everyone. The Shirley Community Church, formerly the Shirley United Methodist Church, will change its worship service to 11 a.m. for this Sunday only. You are also invited to attend regular Sunday worship, held at the Shirley town hall at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays. For additional information, contact church pastor, Dr. Everett L. Parker at 695-31263. To reach the Old Home Sunday activities from the south, turn off Route 15 at the Lower Shirley Corner and proceed directly to the town hall. From Greenville and points north, head south on Route 15 and turn right on the Upper Shirley Corner and proceed directly to the town hall. |
