GREENVILLE - The Natural Resource Education Center will sponsor a program by Dr. Robert Sanford on Reading The Forested Landscape: Signs of Culture in the Forest on Thursday, August 29 at 7 PM in the All-Purpose Room at Nickerson School. The program will focus on interpreting and appreciating everyday signs of the past found in the woods, such as stone walls, cellar holes, daylilies, tools, etc. Signs of logging, settlements, and camps as well as Native American and recent history will be discussed. Examples of forested landscapes in other northeastern states as well as Maine will be featured, and will lead to a discussion of what people might find and have seen in the Moosehead area. Dr. Sanford is Associate Professor of Environmental Science and Policy at the University of Southern Maine. He has also worked as a land use regulator and a consulting archaeologist, and has coauthored two books on archaeological assessment and numerous articles and chapters on landscape interpretation and history. There will be no charge for the program and donations to the Natural Resource Education Center will be appreciated. For more information contact Linda at 207-695-3668. |
