The Moosehead/Moose River Trail Sytem

The Moosehead/Moose River Trail is envisioned as primarily a hiking trail linking some of the most stunning places in our North Woods. In some places suitable, such as lower elevation and more even terrain, the trail will be multi-use.

The Trail would link the towns of Greenville, Kokadjo, Jackman and Rockwood. The Trail would journey alongside such waterways as Moosehead Lake, Lobster Lake, the St. John ponds, the Moose, Penobscot and Kennebec Rivers. The Trail will also ascend numerous peaks and ridges, including Big Squaw, Big Spencer, Russell, Green, Boundary Bald and Sally Mountains. The Trail will also be bookended by two of the highest waterfalls in New England-Little Wilson and Moxie Falls.

In the Moosehead Lake and Moose River area, there is a dearth of backpacking opportunities. While Mount Kineo, Lobster Mountain and even Sally Mountain all involve a lengthy canoe trip in order to reach the trailhead, there are no true backpacking trips of sufficient length and challenge. There is a desire for an indigenous trail system, involving a multi-day (and even multi-week!) hiking, and the Moosehead/Moose River trail fulfills this need. The Trail also offers an economic cornerstone to an increasingly diversified economy in our region. It can provide opportunities for local businesses such as sporting camps and guides.

The Moosehead Trail Club is working with local residents, landowners and organizations to begin Phase I of the Trail, which would extend over Number 4, Baker, Lily Bay, Elephant, Blue Ridge and Rum Mountains. The the primary landowner of these lands, Plum Creek Timber Co., is working with the group to identify routes and trail construction is expected to begin within the next year.
