Stolen Plum Creek office computer found

By Diana Bowley of the News Staff - BIG MOOSE TOWNSHIP - A hard drive and a computer stolen late last month from Plum Creek Timber Co.'s field office during a break-in has been recovered. Two other computers and a monitor are still missing.

A hiker walking a trail near the timber company's field office last Wednesday spied the three computers and the hard drive near a small stream but was unaware they had been stolen, Investigator Mike Gould of the Piscataquis County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday.

When she returned to her home out of the region on Friday and read of the break-in, she called the Sheriff's Department.

Sgt. Robert Young went to the scene on Friday, but found only one computer and hard drive. He also found two pairs of latex gloves at the scene, according to Gould.

Burglars apparently removed a second-floor window screen on July 27 to enter the timber company's office, where they rifled through company files and left with the three computers and hard drive.

It is not known if the break-in is related to the company's controversial development project in the Moosehead region, the largest subdivision development proposed in Maine.

The company plans to develop a resort and housing project involving nearly 1,000 lots over 426,000 acres in the region.

The break-in occurred a day after opponents of the company's development said they would pursue every means possible to stall the project, including lawsuits or a citizen referendum.

Jim Lehner, Plum Creek's general manager in the Northeast region, was unaware that police had recovered some items taken in the break-in.

Told of the find, Lehner said Tuesday that it appeared that the burglars were not after the computers to resell.

"It does appear they were after information," he said.

Police are seeking information about the missing computers and monitor. Anyone with information should call 564-3304.
