"IN THE NEWS"

Moosehead Historical Society News

Today, when we flip a light switch, we are instantly flooded with illumination. But it hasn't always been so, particularly in small villages such as Greenville in the early days of the 1900s. One of the earliest attempts to bring electricity to Moosehead Lake came in 1902 when the Independent Light & Power Company was formed.

Information about this company and the locations throughout town where power poles were erected and lines were strung are found in the July issue of "Insight," a quarterly journal of local history published by the Moosehead Historical Society.

Additionally, there is a profile of the late Madeline Jennings (1902-1999), a talented musician and inspiration to countless students of music over the decades. In addition to teaching music (she received her training from the legendary Ruby True of Greenville), Mrs. Jennings provided music for the Union Evangelical Church in Greenville and the Rockwood Community Church for several decades. She was also known for making some of the best doughnuts in Greenville.

There is also an anecdotal recollection of The Brady Gang of Greenville Junction, a group of youths who banded together for fun and entertainment in the years following World War II. Several other articles and information round out the issue.

"Insight" is published quarterly and is a benefit of membership in the Moosehead Historical Society. Dues are $25 a year for family, or $10 for an individual. Benefits include free docent-guided tours of the campus during the summer, the journal, and a discount in our gift shop.
