Union 60 begins consolidaiton planning
Tuesday, July 10, 2007
By BEN BRAGDON - GREENVILLE - The towns that make up Union 60 will soon designate their representatives to serve on the planning committee that will set the path for a new regional school district.

At meetings this week, the Greenville and Shirley School Committees will discuss how they will choose their representatives for the state-madated Regional School Unit (RSU) planning committee. Kingsbury and Beaver Cove held similar discussions last week.

The committee will be made up of one school board member, one municipal officer, and one community member from each municipality included in the proposed RSU. The members will join similarly appointed members from SAD 13 in Bingham, SAD 12 in Jackman, SAD 59 in Madison and SAD 74 in North Anson to form the RSU planning committee.

The Reorganization Planning Committee, as they are known, will determine the structure of the proposed new RSU. The committee will make decisions on governance, including the size and composition of the RSU board an dits method of voting. The reorganization plan must be submitted to the state by December 1. If that plan is approved by the state, it would go to referendum in the member municipalities by January 15, 2008. The earliest the plans would be put in place would be July 2008.

The representatives should be chosen by the end of July, and will have their first meeting by early August.

"I imagine they will be meeting quite frequently between August and December," said Union 60 Superintendent Heather Perry. "I imagine at least twice a month, if not more."
