GREENVILLE - Moosehead Sanitary District officials offered on Wednesday to take over responsibility for operating the town's septic waste site. The sanitary district owns the site, but it is licensed to the town. Septic waste from Greenville, Shirley and Beaver Cove is deposited there. "I suspect it can be done, and I think if done right, it's going to be good for all of us," Greenville Town Manager John Simko said Friday. "It makes sense. They are the property owner, and they are in the solid waste business." Simko was directed by selectmen on Wednesday to work with the sanitary district trustees to fine-tune the proposal, discuss the possibility with the Department of Environmental Protection and report back to the board. "The most compelling reason to work with them is they might be able to take some of the septage waste directly into their wastewater treatment system," Simko said, noting that would occur only with DEP approval. The town manager said the main concern of selectmen is that the waste generated by Greenville residents should have priority over other communities. If the sanitary district took over the entire operation, the trustees would determine who could use it and what fees would be charged. He said the trustees intend to accept the septic waste from all three communities. Simko said trustees think that with better maintenance and a possible expansion more septic waste could be accepted, which has been a concern of town officials for years. |
