Alexander steps down as police chief
Tuesday, June 12, 2007
GREENVILLE - Duane Alexander, Greenville's police chief, has tendered his resignation to seek other professional opportunities effective June 30. Chief Alexander has served the town in this position since November 1993.

"While we're sad to lose Duane as our chief, we respect his decision to pursue other challenges. He has done a very good job for us, and he will be sorely missed." said Town Manager John Simko.

During his 14-year tenure, Duane worked to modernize the Greenville Police Department, overseeing the implementation of a computer system for incident reporting. Chief Alexander also worked closely with the town manager and other department heads in the design and construction of the new municipal building, which houses the new police station.

In 2004, Duane Alexander used his Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training to intervene in an attempted suicide, saving the life of a local resident. For his actions, Duane was named the CIT Person of the Year by Northeast Crisis and the Charlotte White Center.

Members of the community are encouraged to greet the outgoing Chief at a reception in his honor Friday, June 22 at the Municipal Building from 4-6 p.m.

An interim chief will be named prior to June 30 to assume duties after that date until a hiring process can be completed to fill the position. Sgt. Scott MacMaster and Corporal Charlie Runnels will oversee day-to-day operations for the remainder of this month.
