Greenville re-elects selectmen at special municipal election
Wednesday, May 24, 2006
By Diana Bowley of the News Staff - GREENVILLE- Bruce Hanson, who contested the June 2005 municipal election after he lost his seat on the Board of Selectmen, reclaimed his seat Tuesday during a special municipal election.

Also re-elected to his seat on the board Tuesday was Alan McBrierty.

The special election was held at the direction of a Superior Court justice who was asked to rule on the validity of last June's election after Hanson questioned the legality of the vote. It took several months for the court to rule on the question.

Hanson, who lost his seat to Dan McLaughlin by one vote in the June race, said some residents told him they had tried to vote between 7 and 8 p.m. but could not because the doors to the municipal office were locked. The polls closed at 7 rather than 8 that night because the annual town meeting was completed in one night. Town officials were not aware Maine law stipulates that warrants must list the hours when the polls open and close. While the Greenville municipal warrant listed the opening hour for the polls, it did not provide a closing time.

Only the names of the four candidates who ran in June for the two seats on the Board of Selectmen were on the special election ballot. The votes were as follows: Paul Arno Fichtner III, 142; Dan McLaughlin, 162; Hanson, 284, and McBrierty, 308.
