Kineo has been an important name to countless generations of people, from early Paleo-Indian cultures to tourists of the Victorian era and into the modern day. But most people today know very little about the history of the mountain which bears the name, and the series of hotels which once stood on the long peninsula jutting into Moosehead Lake. Many people have heard of the "Mt. Kineo House" or the "Mt. Kineo Hotel" (the names are used synonymously), but few other than historians are aware that at least five hotels or inns have been located on nearly the same site over nearly a century from the mid-1840s. What are some of the legends of the hotels? What are some of the stories and legends of the mountain iteself? Why was the mountain such a lure for Native Americans that they often traveled hundreds of miles to it? What led to the eventual demolition (and mysterious burning) of the last grand hotel in 1938? All of these questions and many more are explored in an exciting new book from Greenville author Dr. Everett L. Parker. Titled "Kineo: Moosehead sentinel from Native Americans to hotel grandeur," the book is now available in select stores or from the publisher, Moosehead Communications, 719 Moosehead Lake Rd., Greenville, ME 04441. This is the fourth in a series of local history books by Dr. Parker, who is executive director of the Moosehead Historical Museum in Greenville. Other titles in the series are: "Beyond Moosehead II: The story of the Great North Woods of Maine from pre-history through the lumbering era"; "Railroads of the North Woods"; and "Seboomook from Native Americans to POWS." Each is priced at $8.95 plus tax, and can be mailed anywhere at $10.95 each. As a pre-summer special, all four books can be ordered postpaid for $32.95. The Kineo book, which has over 80 vintage photographs, including many rare scenes, is one of three recently completed by Dr. Parker, who has authored more than a dozen books. A forthcoming Kineo related book will be "Legends and Tales of Mt. Kineo," and that is expected to be on sale before the Fourth of July. The third book by Dr. Parker also should be in stores by July. It is part of the national "Portraits of America" series by Arcadia Publishing Co. of New Hampshire. The book is titled "Portraits of America: Moosehead Lake 1900-1950." This book will have over 200 photographs of the greater Moosehead region taken during the first five decades of the 1950s. Most of the photographs were taken from archives of the Moosehead Historical Museum, and profits from sale of this book will benefit the museum. |
