5.5 Million in funding to expand, improve Maine airports

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins announced today that nine Maine airports will receive a combined $5,516,835 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as part of continued work to upgrade and maintain the state’s aviation facilities.
“Maine’s airports, both big and small, are critical resources for the communities in which they exist and the people they serve,” Senators Snowe
and Collins said in a joint statement. “It is essential that we enhance and maintain the infrastructure at each of these airports in order to remain
competitive and efficient.”
The funding will be distributed as follows:
- $111,240—Greenville Municipal Airport: funding will be used to pave and improve the existing gravel taxiway
- $2,650,000-- Portland International Jetport: this grant funding will be used for construction of both the south end general aviation parking apron and for terminal apron design efforts to accommodate the needs of the terminal building expansion
- $1,873,400—Oxford County Regional Airport: to provide funding for runway reconstruction and obstruction lighting
- $233,062—Machias Valley Municipal Airport, Machias: this grant will provide funding for rehabilitation of the aircraft parking apron
- $210,000—Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport: to provide funding for enhanced markings and safety area design. Funds will also be used to
purchase a plow truck to assist with snow removal
- $194,133—Eastern Slopes Regional Airport, Fryeburg: to provide funding for pavement maintenance
- $105,000—Central Maine Airport, Norridgewock: to provide funding for a study to identify obstructions to protected airspace surfaces and recommend appropriate mitigation measures
- $100,000—Eastport Municipal Airport: funds will help construct a fuel farm to provide revenues for the airport to assist in achieving self-sufficiency
- $40,000—Newton Field, Jackman: this grant will provide funding for the rehabilitation of the airport rotating beacon
