Monson celebrates snow in style

MONSON - 'Come young, Come old, Embrace the cold' was this year's motto and come they did under dazzling sunshine and mild temperatures during Monson's Annual Snow Roller Day on Saturday, sponsored by Lake Hebron Artisans.

After a 'Big-n-Hearty' breakfast at the Monson Community Church, the day was officially kicked off by a team of Belgian horses pulling the snow roller up and down the Main Street. Then dogs began pulling sleds across Lake Hebron and behind the Monson Elementary School, sledding and snow shoe races were held as well as times snow shoe jump rope contest. A lunch benefit Project Graduation broke up the day followed by skating, kick sledding and ski tossing competitions at the town rink.

Town businesses offered plates of homemade cookies for the customers to sample and then vote on as part of the Cookie-Walk Contest. Lake Hebron Artisans, sponsor of teh Snow Roller Day, also proudly displayed the six winners of their juried K-12 art contest in their front window while offereing face painting inside.

The Monson Museum doors were open, the coffee was always on, the snow roller was parked just outside and kids of all ages caught the free horse drawn wagon rides right out front.

A final awards ceremony was held after dark on the lake where Tom Adkins and Tricia Moulton were named top Snow Meisters, having earned the highest cumulative game points. Sheldon Slate provided the engraved slate plaques. The community then picked sides for a tug of war and bonfire. Slab wood was lit on the ice by the fire department.
