Big Squaw Mountain opens lower lift
Small crown enjoys sking over holiday break
Tuesday, January 01, 2008
By JONATHAN PRATT - BIG SQUAW TWP - Thanks to Mother Nature, and some long hours put in by area folks, Big Squaw Mountain Ski Resort is offering skiers the chance to traverse the local slopes.

Just two days after Christmas Day, a small crown was enjoying the conditions without complaint. Six trails are open, essentially the entire lower mountain, the trails are groomed, and the kitchen even has lunch fare available.

The Red Eagle Ski Team was able to hold their New Years Day Camp last week, giving the young athletes the chance to work on the carving skills. The camp, administered by Rocky & Betsy Rockwell, included skiers Grades 1 through 8 over the school vacation break. The proceeds went to support local ski racing.

Business is steady enough for employees, including Mark Gilbert, who helps man the ski shop, amoung his countless other duties. "We're ready and able," Gilbert commented, adding, "we have great packages for everyone, for both skiing and snow boarding."

Prices remain affordable for families, too. They are offering lift tickets at twenty dollars, ski/snowboard rentals are at twenty dollars, too. For fifty-three dollars, you may purchase your lift ticket, rent a full package for skiing or snow boarding, and receive a one-hour lesson.

The slopes will be open, conditions permitting, weekdays until January 2 and February school vacation break. Otherwise, they hope to be in operation on a weekends only basis until the skiing season ends.

Visitors are encouraged to call ahead at 695-1000 for conditions prior to making the trip up to the mountain ski area itself.
