What's New at Shaw Public Library
Spring is coming and we are starting to prepare for our busy summer. We have been working diligently all winter on an Inventory of our materials, and we still have been purchasing new materials for your enjoyment.

This March, we were notified that our Library has been awarded a Rose and Samuel Rudman Grant of $1,000.00 for the purchase of playaways, self-playing digital audiobooks. This is a compact, lightweight device that is powered by a single battery and is the size of a deck of cards and easily fits into a shirt pocket. This will be a new form of audiobook for our Collection, and we are purchasing them in Collaboration with the Abbott Memorial Library in Dexter. We will each purchase a number of playaways, and every few months we will exchange a number of books, so that each library will have a fresh selection of titles.

We are starting to plan for our summer programming. We will be working with the Moosehead Chamber in celebrating the Moose Mainea, with a month long Children's Program. Linda Wohlforth is planning to start on May 17th, at 10:00 AM-11:00 AM, at the library, and continue every Saturday, the 24th, 31st, and June 7th. There will be a final reading time on June 14th, at 9:30 at the Gazebo.

Our Children's Summer Reading Program this year is entitled “Catch the Reading Bug.” We will make sure that we have many books about bugs in our Collection. We are encouraging children to continue reading during summer vacation through a variety of activities. Weekly story times for preschoolers and early readers will be held on Friday mornings, starting on July 11th, from 10-11 AM. The rest of the dates are July 18th, 25th, August 1st, 8th, and the 15th. They will be chock full of all sorts of fun activities. We will be providing reading logs to our independent readers when they sign up. Incentives will be awarded as books are entered in the log and read. We will have more information as summer nears.

We have again been awarded a Reading and Discussion “Let's Talk About It” Program from the Maine Humanities Council for this summer. The Program we will be having is entitled “Where Am I? The Individual & the Community.” The books will include: “To Kill a Mocking Bird” by Harper Lee; “Empire Falls” by Richard Russo; The Commitments” by Roddy Doyle; The Shipping News by E.Annie Proulx; and Climbing the God Tree: A Novel in Stories by Jaimee Wriston Colbert. As we are still in the planning stage, we don't know for sure who our facilitator will be, and we are in hopes of having our meetings at the Town Office Meeting Room. We will have more information soon.

This summer we will be hosting an Author Tea, on August 4th, at Diane Bartley's B&B, from 4-6 PM. We hope to have many local and Maine authors come, but we are still in the early planning stage. One author who is definitely coming is Janet Chapman, who wrote the Highlander Series, which takes place around the Greenville area. Janet has graciously agreed, as a way for us to raise some money for the library, to let us hold a raffle from now until August 4th, with the winner's name, male or female, used as a secondary character in her Highlander Christmas Book, which will come out in November, 2009.
