The spirit of Greenville to this day is marked by the pioneering spirit of its settlers and their extraordinary willingness to help each other. These intangible qualities are those which others find special about Greenville: a sense of being on the edge of the wilderness and an extraordinarily high degree of genuine concern for friend and stranger. Some historians of the town say friendliness and helpfulness are natural in a community as geographically remote as Greenville has been.
Located north of the 45th parallel, on a line with Montreal, Greenville climatically and vegetatively has more in common with the northernmost United States and southern Canada than it has with southern Maine.
An elected five-person Board of Selectmen oversees the town government. The day to day operations of the town are run by the Town Manager, who works for the Board of Selectmen. Other elected Boards consist of the library trustees and the school board. The town manager also coordinates activities for the seven-person planning board, whose members are appointed by the selectmen. Other appointed boards are the economic development committee, airport committee, zoning board of appeals and the recreation committee. Additional appointed positions within the Town government include the town clerk, tax collector, treasurer, road commissioner, and welfare agent. Municipal government also includes a part-time animal control officer and a part-time codes enforcement officer. Also available are a part-time plumbing codes officer, ballot and election clerks. A three-person public works crew and two clerical workers round out the group of people who make our town "work". The school department is run by the local school board. The superintendent of schools, who works for the local school board, runs the day to day school operations. |
