The 100-Mile Wilderness Sled Dog Race
Plum Creek's 100-Mile Wilderness Sled Dog Race Post-Poned until March 18, 2006
Due to lack of snow, bare gravel roads, and open water on lakes and ponds all make this race impossible for this Saturday, Feb. 11th.
After consulting other race and event schedules, we agreed to postpone the event until Saturday, March 18, running the same course under the same rules and with the same purse as planned for this weekend, weather permitting. If necessary, we may re-route the course off Moosehead Lake if ice conditions are poor on March 18 - for now, we will try for the same route from Greenville to Brownville and back as we used last year and had planned for this Feb. 11th.
The Town of Greenville and all other race organizers apologize for any inconveneince, and thank everyone who has helped to make this event possible, especially our main sponsor, Plum Creek Timber Company, who has generously provided the $5,000 purse for this event. We remain committed to working hard to make this event just as big of a success March 18!

The 2nd annual Greenville to Brownville 100 mile race will be a challenge for musher and dogs alike. This year Plum Creek has stepped forward too come up with $5,000 for the race purse.

Contestants in the 100-mile race will begin on Moosehead Lake at 9 AM on Saturday, March 18, 2006. (formerly February 11) The 100-mile race mushers will travel through the “The 100 mile wilderness” on an “out and back” trail. At the turnaround on Railroad Avenue in Brownville Junction, mushers will rest themselves and dogs for a minimum of two hours. The race, this year, is limited to 20 teams. Viewing points will be at the Starting point, on the county road near Katahdin Iron Works, and at the Brownville layover on Railroad Avenue.

The race is a collaborative effort of the Towns of Greenville and Brownville along with the Moosehead Riders and Brownville Snowmobile Clubs and many land owners. This race starts what is a larger two-week long SnoFest in Greenville.

Greenville's SnoFest is a “celebration of winter sports”, showcasing and offering chances for the public to participate in both motorized and non-motorized activities. Greenville is working with several local organizations and landowners – including the Appalachian Mountain Club and Plum Creek Timber Company - to promote and expand winter sports in the region. Brownville is also planning some additional winter related activities for the race weekend this year.

Again, the goals for this year's race are to get community members involved, both as volunteers and spectators, to have a fun and to run a safe race for dogs and mushers. Plum Creek Timber Company has stepped forward as the major sponsor with a race purse of around $5,000.00.

Behind the scenes, a group of dedicated individuals from throughout Piscataquis County have been working on the race since June 2004. The Appalachian Mountain Club has been a big supporter of this effort from the start of this process.

For more information, contact Amy Dugan at info@mtnridge.com or Terry Knowles at mawtrk@midmaine.com, or contact the Towns of Brownville or Greenville, or the Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce.

The race starts in Greenville at 9:00 am, runs 50 miles to Brownville Junction, and then back again. Teams will have a mandatory layover of at least 2 hours at the Brownville Checkpoint.

Teams should begin arriving in Brownville Junction around noon.

Radio Checkpoints
There will be ham radio operators at the Greenville Road Turn (near Hedgehog Gate), at the KI Gate, and on Front Street and at the Checkpoint Headquarters at the BJHS Alumni Hall in Brownville Junction.
